The Jewel Shoppe was founded in 1961 by Mrs. Jewel Snow. At that time, the shoppe carried a modest line of jewelry and gifts but, through the efforts of Mrs. Snow and her husband, Odell Snow, the business grew and earned its reputation for fine quality jewelry and gifts.
In 1977, a building that adjoined the shop to the east and housed Files Barber Shop was purchased and used to double the size of the existing jewelry store. (The wood from the old Barber Sign still remains in the brick wall separating the bank next door and The Jewel Shoppe.) In April of 1991, Mrs. Snow retired, turning the company over to her son, Johnny and his wife Mary. Since 1991, the Snows doubled the size of their shoppe with a renovation in 1996 and in 2002, the addition of another building to display their potteries, gourmet products and house the Mud Jug Coffeehouse.
It was in 1977 that Johnny Snow began work as a bench jeweler, apprenticing with his father. Johnny has also had the opportunity to study in various schools to become a skilled goldsmith providing their shoppe with all jewelry repair needs as well as custom design work. With a degree in Banking and Finance from Mississippi State University, Johnny has been able to merge his business background and his skills as a jeweler to carry on the family business.
Mary joined Johnny in 1991 when Jewel retired, but she had to learn the business from the beginning. Her keen interest in gemstones and, more importantly, a love of well-designed jewelry helped her adapt to her new career. Her business background came from working with her father many years, but her education and research in the creative arts enabled her to use her creativity and ideas to develop beautiful jewelry.
The Snows and their capable staff continually work to upgrade their knowledge and abilities with certifications, new equipment and by being members of professional organizations such as The Independent Jewelers Organization, Jewelers of America, National Bridal Service, and Retail Jewelers Organization, and Mr. Snow is a on the Board for the Mississippi State Jewelers Association.
